Getting Behind the Microphone

I started college as a music major. As I entered Central Connecticut State College (now University), I was looking forward to being a music teacher. Unfortunately, I auditioned on the wrong instrument — the piano — instead of my best instrument — the oboe. I played piano very well (I played Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and several compositions by Bach), but I was self-taught, so my fingering wasn’t strictly correct. I got bounced.

Then I fell into the college radio station, and a whole new world opened up. When I say “fell,” it was literal. I had knee surgery just before school started and was on crutches. I was walking down the hall in the Student Union building when someone turned the corner out of the radio station and knocked me over. It was the man who would become my husband, on his way to talk to the Sports Director. At the time, David was broadcasting basketball games for the radio station along with his roommate, also named David.

As he helped me up, I asked what the area was. It was the college radio station, WFCS. I was in love.

The general manager came into the office, where I had settled to catch my breath. I asked him how I could be a part of the operation. He laughed and said, “Let’s see what you’ve got, but not today. Let’s talk tomorrow. In the meantime, want a tour?”
